Audrius Pocius (b. 1991) is a curator and philosopher currently based in Vilnius. In his curatorial practice he focuses on conceptual and performative aspects of art and their potency for social and cultural critique.
Audrius was a curator and educator at the Contemporary Art Centre in Vilnius (2014-2019), where he organized public programs, events and exhibitions. Some notable projects include group shows Kitty Kraus, Martin Ebner (2016), The Summer Vocation of a Teenage Bee (2018) as well as solo shows Träger(2017) by Robertas Narkus and ēcheîa (2017) by Arturas Bumšteinas. He has also worked on establishing JCDecaux Award – the annual prize for young contemporary artists in Lithuania and has served as co-curator of its first two iterations as well as served as assistant curator for other projects.
During this period, he also cooperated with P/////AKT, Amsterdam which resulted in two duo exhibitions: Today is the Color Day Meets at Day (2018) by Laura Kaminskaitė & Antanas Gerlikas as well as Town at Edge of Garden at Edge of Townby Evita Vasiljeva & Dan Walwin.
In 2020, together with Edgaras Gerasimovičius and Vaida Steponavaitė, Audrius founded Swallow project space, where he curatedA Fabulist Manifesto: Audio / Visual Agitprop (for Children) (2021) by Studio for Propositional Cinema, the duo showThe Surface is Enough by Jakub Czyszczoń and Grupa Budapeszt and the group showThe Weather In Fred Sandback (2022, co-curated with Martin Ebner and Ariane Müller), among other shows.
Since 2022 Audrius is the founding director of Medūza space for Contemporary Art and Culture (under the umbrella of Lithuanian Artists’ Association) where he is actively working to present and provide institutional support for Lithuanian and international artists as well as develop original curatorial projects. He oversees the development of exhibition and public programs, as well as institutional partnerships and networks. In 2023, he established Videocapsule, the first screening room in Vilnius, dedicated to artists’ films. Some recent exhibitions in the institution include first solo presentations in Lithuania by artists such as Andrius Arutiunian (2023), Augustas Serapinas (2022), Lou Cantor (2024), among many others.
Since 2019, he is a PhD candidate in Philosophy at Vilnius University (supervised by prof. Kristupas Sabolius) where he also works as a junior researcher. His work primarily focuses on aspects of art, education and aesthetics in the context of Theodor W. Adorno’s concept of “exakte Phantasie”. He is also lecturing on various topics related to philosophy, aesthetics and contemporary culture at Vilnius Academy of Art. He had previously taught at Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, Vilnius University and Umeå Academy of Fine Arts, Sweden.
